My Dad used to balance the opened tin on the gas hob to melt it  Not sure I'd fancy trying that but maybe dropping the tin into a jug of boiling water might work?

My parents also use to put it on the gas hob to melt, before that it was left on the harth by the coal fire

Try putting the tin on top of one of your radiators.
  • Did you know that once polish is softened, you can mix colours? I'd forgotten about doing this in the 70s to get the right shade for my treasured Kickers - a lot cheaper than buying a full jar of the branded stuff!
  • Have softened it but it still didn't work too well. It was too thick. Anyway I have done my shoes and thrown the rest away - it was only a small amount.

    thanks all

If you hold the tin over a candle (making sure you hold the tin with an old rag or something), the polish will melt and then solidify into a decent cake of new looking polish.

    ;)
