Do you mean that you will have to do a self-assessment for 2008/09? I don't think you will be able to do it until April at the earliest, and you have until the end of Jan 2010 if you do it online.
The first thing to do is to get yourself registered on the Government Gateway to do self-assessment, which you should be able to do now. It will take a week or so to get sorted with an activation code. When you can log in, have a look around at the various pages.
When the time comes, you can start filling in the form, but you can stop and start any time you want, and you could always fill it in with estimates if you just want to work through to the end to see what is needed (but obviously if you put in any temporary figures, make sure you check everything and update to the final figures before you submit it!!!) When you've filled out the form you can print it out and check it - nothing becomes final until you hit the button to 'submit' it to HMRC.0
