Have a word with Jessops - pretty sure that some of the older Nikon (possibly Sigma) lenses will fit. Nothing like only having a 50mm fixed-focal to hone your skills - think Cartier-Bresson only had a 40mm...

The 18-55 isn't necessarily the most suitable first lens to get. It depends on what sort of pictures you want to be taking. Be a little more specific, and include your budget, and we'll be able to help you out a little more :)

If you want the 18-55, the best thing would have been to buy the D50 kit option, as it comes bundled with the camera for something like £50 extra. If possible, consider returning the camera and buying one that comes with the kit lens.

But the best cheap walkaround nikon lens is the 18-70. Its about £100 more than the 18-55, but worth every penny.

Must agree with Halaku that the 18-55mm kit lens is not the best option so you're better off getting something with a wider zoom range. My dream walk-around lens would probably be the Nikkor 18-200mm lens but that's silly money for an amateur so I could probably live with a Sigma 18-200mm for about half the price (£273.95 from here

If that's too much, then here are a few more options you could consider:
Nikkor 18-70mm AF f/3.5 - f/4.5G IF-ED DX Lens: has good reviews and available for £173.95 including p&p from here

SIGMA 28-135mm f3.8/5.6 ASPHERICAL MACRO (NIKON AF-D): equivalent to 40-190mm in 35mm SLR-speak so no wide-angle, available for £99.99 from here but currently out-of-stock

Sigma 18-50mm + 55-200mm for Nikon: two lenses covering 18-200mm, available for £185.95 including p&p from here

Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG Macro Nikon: equivalent to 40-420mm in 35mm SLR-speak so again no wide-angle, available for £193.95 including p&p from here

I believe all of these lenses are compatible with the Nikon D50 but you should check before buying. Also, with camera lenses you get what you pay for so the lenses above are unlikely to produce the same results as the equivalent Nikon pro lenses - should be okay for casual day-to-day shooting though. (And isn't there that saying that the quality of the picture is more down to the eye of the photographer than the cost of the camera?) Finally, most of these prices are from the Digital Camera Company - I've never bought from them and I don't know if these are the best prices: I just got fed up with scrolling through endless lists in Kelkoo and settled on their website instead!

I'd be interested to see what others find in terms of good offers for lenses compatible with the D50 - there are probably quite a few of us D50 owners judging from the D50 threads on the chat forums over the last few weeks!

If its any help, I use the Sigma 18-50mm + 55-200mm on a Canon 10D with excellent results.

I've got a Sigma 18-200 lens. Its a great all range lens. Am looking to get a prime lens though.
