Debt Free whilst Eating Healthily

I don't know whether anyone else is feeling low at the moment but I just can't seem to get well at the moment. I seem to be going from one cold to the next and most of the time I feel really run down. I have decided that I am going to try on my debt free journey to eat lots of healthy food. If anyone has any hints and tips, they would be greatly appreciated. I have today bought from the shop strawberries that were reduced from £3.99 to £1.99 (I wouldn't have bought them at full price, there wasn't many in the box!!) and some blueberries that were reduced to £1.00. Now I don't know a great deal, but I remember somewhere that blueberries were really good for you. Something to do with antioxidants maybe??

Anyway, I am pretty useless with healthy eating, I would eat toast and carbs all day every day if I didn't make an effort. I have also started taking some multivitamins and individual supplements in the hope of boosting my immune system but am yet to notice any difference after about 4 weeks if I am honest! :o

Smoothies are a great way to add a dose of fruit and veg into your diet in a quick, easy and tasty way. Just whizz up some berries with banana and milk or fruit juice and you'll feel so refreshed!

  • Well my eating healthily routine has so far not worked, I have woken up this morning with what feels like a head full of snot and a general feeling of flulikeness! Even my teeth feel like I have been chattering them in the night! I think I must be going for the world record of how many times over one winter period I can be ill. Anybody got any natural remedies or ideas of how to help this cold along on its way?

I need to be well by next Saturday as it is my birthday!

  • Try some Echinacea for the cold to boost your immune system, just take it for a couple of months though. Be careful that you aren't overdoing the vitamin tablets - you don't want to overdose on anything!

Have you tried growing anything yourself? Even if you've only got windowsill room you can do herbs, salad, sprouting seeds, which all help add nutrients. And you could try local markets if you've got any, for cheaper fruit & veg. Have a look on the Old Style forum on here, they've got loads of ideas for eating well cheaply.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

  • It can be really difficult eating halthily on a budget, all the cheapest food is the worst for you. Small changes make a huge difference though, we have changed to wholewheat pasta and brown rice (only a little more expensive), we have bought our fruit and veg from Aldi which is really cheap, we just buy whatever is on offer and then look up on the internet what we can make with it.

Cheapest things (and tastiest) are always the things that are in season, so at the moment it would be mostly things like carrots, swede, purple sprouting broccoli, leeks. I find if you buy loads of this and some stock and make soups in batches you can feeze the excess and just defrost when you get the munchies.

From past experience though you should give it a few weeks before you start to feel much better on a new diet, you often feel a little worse for a bit first so don't give up straight away if you feel like you're not getting anywhere.

    Good luck!

  • Try squeezing the juice of a lemon (half the lemon) with a couple of teaspoons of honey mixed with hot water, this is what I take when I have a cold and it really helps.

Also prevention is better than cure, my last 'cold' was in August 2008 and since then I have been drinking 250mls of fresh orange juice a day and haven't had one since then. Usually I am always the first to catch a cold/flu!

Hope you feel better soon. :)
