Endownment claim - opinions and advice please

Before we married (1989) DH & I bought a house (borrowed £16K) and were talked into taking an endowment. I was wary, but the advisor at the estate agents was so convincing we took an endowment for £20K (an extra little nest egg too we thought). Just less than two years later we sold the house, left the mortgage but kept the policy (with standard life). A few years ago (before I discovered MSE) I wrote to them and they offered me about £50. I didn't even reply!
Tonight I had a call from EMC ???. They want to take on the case. 35% of compensation as fee.
I don't think I will get much anyway, and am tempted to let them go ahead just to see, however if there was a chance of a decent payout I would rather keep it myself and would go through the paperwork process myself (with the help of MSE of course).
I am hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself can give me some advice.
Thanking in advance.
