FedEx Duty Charges

Why is Federal Express allowed to charge duty without informing customers that this will happen?
My daughter is going to be a bridesmaid in Florida next month. She paid for the bridesmaid's dress including tax with her credit card (asked for by the bride). The dress was then sent over to be tried on and altered (another £57) . Two weeks later there comes another bill from Federal Express asking for £50 duty. The dress cost £111. As the dress is technically going back to Florida with my daughter , can she claim the duty back?
I have since heard of several similar horror stories and Fed Ex threaten so much that people just give in. It just doesn't seem right. :mad:

That FedEx aren't levying the import / Vat charges .... they're doing it on behalf of HMRC. They do add an element for managing the charge / paying Customs ..... but the majority relates to the statutory duty etc chargeable by HMRC.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
