I gave my spares to my son. Despite his carelessness I can't stand by and watch him wheeze when I have inhalers.

Mine is not a life and death situation but if it was it shouldn't be the receptionist's decision.

Basically I can't have any because I haven't had any for a long time, DS can't have any because he had some too recently!

And I've been saving the NHS money by not having any since 2006 when I could have done. It's mse & recycling.;)

If your sons using that many then maybe he needs to go back as the inhalers dont seem to be working enough for him.

DS & I both suffer from asthma and allergies, we do tend to swap pumps and share them depending on who needs them at the time. I also had a huge bagful given to me by a friend, GP said this was fine as long as they were in date.DS is young and careless and keeps losing his, yesterday he left them in college, and I really needed to use one last night but I'd given my last ones to him so we didn't have any.

The GP was closed this AM so OH went to the chemist to ask for inhalers for us, the receptionist refused because I hadn't had any on prescription since 2006.

I suppose many would say this is my own fault, but DS has been getting his on prescription regularly, and although I've had mine from elsewhere, right now I can't get any, either from the GP or pharmacy. How come a receptionist in a chemist has final say in what could potentially be a life or death situation?

They don't, it's the law. If you require prescription only medication, then you need a prescription.

If you have run out of regular medication and in urgent need of it, and unable to get a prescription immediately due to the surgery being closed, there is provision in law for the pharmacy to supply you with a limited amount to cover until you can get a prescription for a further supply. However, as this is not funded by the NHS, you may be required to pay for it. You must also furnish whatever proof is required that you are currently taking this medicine and that you are taking it regularly. This proof could be in the form of:

    * The pharmacy's record showing that you have had it often and recently
    * Repeat prescription form (white part of prescription) dated recently and showing that you have the medication on repeat
    * Old container from when the medication was last dispensed to you showing details of name/dose/date supplied, etc.

It's the same pharmacy we've been using for many years. We did bring in the repeat prescription forms and had every intention of paying for it but the conversation didn't get that far!

Incidentally I also ticked the box on my script for medication I had last had in August and that was also refused.
