Sheriff officers have been to visit me

Hi, I'm just new here and my apologies if my post is in wrong place or off topic. It is about debt but mainly about something that happened today as a result of some debt. Thankfully we are not (I think) in a lot of debt but enough that we have had to make a lot of cut backs lately to manage. Today I was arriving home and saw 2 pretty tough looking characters at my neighbours door, chatting to my neighbour. A strange car was parked in my drive. As I got out of the car the 2 men left my neighbour and called my name. I said yes thats me and they just came really close and said can we have a chat inside. I panicked a bit as they were a bit "men in black characters" and told them to stand back a bit from me and asked who they were. Again they said can we talk in private. I asked for ID and they said they were sheriff officers and handed me a warrant in my husbands name in connection with a debt we thought was sorted. I brought them in and they basically said there was no mistake and we owed money and they'd be back in 2 weeks if it wasn't paid. I asked why they had been talking to my neighbour and they said just finding out when you would be home. Anyway they left and my husband called debtor who apologised that it had been mistakenly handed to sheriff officers (least thats what he told me ) We never had any letters warning us of this visit even though they said today that we did. Now I'm just really horrified as I was quite scared being on my own with a baby. They weren't nasty or anything but I was pretty frightened by the situation and I'm mortified they went and asked my neighbour when I'd be home. It was very obvious they weren't just any old cold callers as my neighbour came to check everything was ok after they'd gone and now I feel like everyone will know my business. Sorry for the rant and apologies again if its off topic.

How horrible for you - I think you need to establish whether this has definitely been sorted out now as if they come back in two and a half weeks I would also be frightened. Did they mention how much was owed??? Maybe you and your OH need to both obtain copies of your credit ratings to see what is going on. I am not sure that debtors mistakenly hand debts over to sheriffs??
