I'm debating buying a Playstation 3 later in the year for husband/family to use, but have no idea where to start!
He currently has a PS2, but I know he would love a PS3!
After a quick search I'm finding lots of different ones 40GB, 60, 80, 160...? What's the difference and does it matter? What's is recommended?
I've heard that they don't play PS2 games?
Can the Blu-ray player play ordinary dvd's as well as blu-ray?
I've heard you can go online? Is this just to play other people and is it free? Or can you actually go online and visit sites, like this one, is that free?
Will I still need my Internet connection with Virgin or can I still use the internet without?
Any other suggestions/recommendations or pointers that you think I should know about?! Sorry - I'm such a PS3 novice!
Also, the big question...where is the best place to buy one?!
Thanks for your help!

The PS3 with the 60gb harddrive is the only one that will play PS2 games as well. They are no longer made new but if you are lucky you might be able to pick one up second hand from somewhere like Gamestaion, that's where we got our one from, although we did have to ring them each weeks for several weeks until they got one in, but decided it was worth waiting to get the right one as we had a lot of PS2 games we could then use on it.
Sorry I don't really know much about the on-line stuff. My son does play the on-line games which have been good.
I'm sure our one does play ordinary dvd's as well as blue-rays.

its the size of the memory,so go for the biggest you can afford as it will soon fill up, with the downloads, and music your put on it.and if you ever get playtv (which turns the ps3 into a freeview tv recorder), recording on to it will also fill it up..its a great piece of kit, i use mine all the time, to watch tv through, play games, watch blu ray movies on, listen to music, i have all my photos on it, and i can stream from my laptop and listen to stuff i have on that.plus i have my psp connected to it and can watch and play the ps3 where ever i am on wireless broadband. hope this hasnt confused you too much, you wont regret getting on , just get the biggest memory you can afford. i wouldnt worry about getting a bundle with games (they are normally rubbish games but you can always ebay them) but i would say get a second controller.0

yes you can go online with it you can connect wireless if you have wifi in your home, or you can connect wired as well, and browse the internet . in fact you need to connect to get the best from your ps3 as in will need to be updated (which is free) probably once a month.
and yes it does play ordinary dvds, it will actaully 'upscale' them which makes them look better.
any other questions do ask....0 -
 defo get your family one if i were you though get a 40g and get a usb external hdd for £60ish that's about 250g to 500gb's from amazon.

The original 60gb (not made now) has 4 usb ports compared to the others 2 ports, it also has card readers & plays SACD & is the only model which is backwards compatible with PS2 games. The 80gb & 160gb models are bundled along with the DS3 (controller with rumble). If playing your PS2 games is important then try to source a 60gb, if not i would go for the 80gb as there's a good chance that you'll get one with the newer, cooler & more energy efficient 65nm chip...
I've heard that they don't play PS2 games?
Only the original 60gb model is backwards compatible...

Yes it will play dvd's and upscales them excellently for a better picture...

The PS3 has a built-in wireless internet browser so you can use your large tv as a monitor. Yep, you can play others online completely free + download free demo games from the PSN store. You will need to keep your Virgin/whoever account...
Any other suggestions/recommendations or pointers that you think I should know about?! Sorry - I'm such a PS3 novice!
It's a complete media hub, you can wirelessly stream your music/pictures/movies from your PC directly to the PS3.... Have fun with it....
Also, the big question...where is the best place to buy one?!
The big question, just keep checking all the main places for the best bundle prices. Try Amazon, Play, Argos, Game, Gamestation, Shopto.com, The Hut.com, etc.....
Thanks for your help!
Hope this helps............What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!0 -
Cheers BriBrian, all my Q's answered!
Really keen to get one now and I know he will just love it as a surprise present! Thanks for all your help.0
