Drums for 16 year old who wants to join a band!

Options
My son wants to learn the drums with the intention of being in a teen band (just for fun). I dont want to spend loads of money on what might be a 10 minute wonder. Does anyone know where I can purchase some relatively cheaply or second hand?

  • Check out your local music shop as many have second hand items that have been part exchanged. You could also spread the cost by using the arts council Take it Away scheme which offers interest free credit for the purchase of instruments, new or second hand and is now availiable in many music stores. http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/takeitaway/

We got my sons drum kit from e-bay. The whole kit was £65, it is a faily basic starter kit but has been fine for him top practice on, he is having drumming lessons and we have agreed that we would upgrade them later on if he sticks with it - he is currently working towards his grade 3, so the phase has lasted!

I did a search on e-bay but searched under distance so I only got kits that were close enough to collect easily.
My sons drum teacher advised not wasting money on a new kit until we were sure he was going to stick with it. Also we were advised when we do upgrade to get a good quality secondhand kit and then upgrade the skins / cymbals as needed.

I am going to look in the arts council link and also the ebay suggestion too.

My son does have phases at times and this may just be a passing one, but I would hate to think I may have stood in the way of a budding Ringo Starr..lol

Are drumming lessons easy to arrange Jog?

    Hi JFC,

My son has his drumming lessons at school. The instructor is one of several that go into the school each week and teach a variety of instruments.

The school pass our details on to the teacher and he then contacts us direct re payment. The lessons cost £10 for a half hour lesson. He does them during the school day, they rotate the time of the lesson so he doesn't always miss the same lesson, the system seems to work well.

When he was in Year 7 we got a 10% discount, this was for all instrument lessons as the school were keen to encorage the children to try.

Might be worth asking at school if they do them.
