Cleaning drinking glasses, living in hard water area

Hi, I live in a hard water area and I am looking for some tips to help me clean drinking glasses (pint, wine glasses etc) which lose their lustre from being subjected to limescale, just from normal day to day washing up. I don't own a dishwasher & any advice/tips on returning the glasses to a near new condition would be most welcome.

Thats an interesting one Dave, if your glasses lose their lustre in hard water area, then logically all the rest of your crockery/cutlery etc must be in the same state, only you can't see the 'bloom' as well. Thinks...... dishwasher owners in hard water areas must have lovely sparkly glasses , so could you try rinsing glasses in a solution of 'rinse aid' like d/w machines?0

I live in a fairly hard water area and I find that it's best if I dry things like glasses and cutlery immediately after washing them. If I leave them, they end up covered in marks. To get them clean, I give them a goood wash in hot soapy water and a good scrub with one of those scrubby sponges, give them a quick rinse and then dry them.
Another option is something I remember my parents doing in their restaurant. You get a jug of boiling water, and hold each glass over the steam. Then you polish it with a clean cloth. It really does make glasses sparkle.0 -
I have the same problem and notice that it's worse if I leave them to dry naturally.0

Yes, I agree. For this reason I end up drying everything off with a tea towel when most of the water has dripped off. Not as hygienic as leaving to dry naturally but what the heck - not discoloured.Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0 -

Thanks for your help, please explain what vinegar water is as i'm a household luddite.0 -
Dave, white vinegar is also known as distilled malt vinegar. It's just vinegar that's clear, and you can buy it in supermarkets right next to the normal vinegar. Personally though I just use regular vinegar and find it works fine and is cheaper too!
I find using a tiny drop of stardrops in water brings glasses up really sparkly, too.0 -
i add a little viniger to the water when i am washing glasswear (often keeping glasswear seperate from the washing up if i know i will be using more later) and dry with a linen towel. also i always wash glass first when doing the washing up .. whe i had a dishwasher in a rented house i still washed glass by hand as the dishwasher left them dull in the drying process!!Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0
