    Great idea - poor execution.

Putting all of the information into one place for people who are in trouble to look up is a good idea IMO.

However it is all so vague - full of look here, you may be able to get help links rather than real tangible support from people who understand. I share the OP's concern too - it shouldn't be used as a party political mouthpiece.

Even Cable is being heralded as the sage of Westminster. I don't remember him standing their shrieking about city woes before it happened.

You must have had your fingers in your ears or been reading from the Labour hymn sheet. Vince Cable has long warned of overpriced property and of people and corporates taking on too much debt.

Back to the website, its typical of the Crash mantra: "We are doing eevrything in our power to..."

Unbelievable.....I loved the analogy he used to try to explain to us simpletons what the banking crisis was all about, electricity!! So when we have all used too much and have no money left to keep things in the house going we don't need to cut back and turn a few things off. Oh no, we need to turn everything on full blast. They should have called the website www.savemysorry@rse.gov.uk

Don't risk any facts getting in the way of good rhetoric...

"Most seriously, though, Cable blames Brown for letting a housing market bubble inflate unchecked, with potentially serious consequences for indebted households and wider economic stability. 'The worst hasn't happened yet, but you've got all the ingredients for a real mess here. You just need higher interest rates, or a serious slowdown in the economy, and we'd be in trouble.'
He attributes this 'mismanagement' partly to the 'carve-up of Britain' between Tony Blair and his Chancellor. He says this has led to many policy areas - including pensions, for example - being simply 'parked in a layby'. 'It's highly dysfunctional,' he says."

he spread of sub-prime: despite record house-building, more people wanted homes than were for sale and they were prepared to borrow more to get their homes. In America people were encouraged to buy homes with cheap credit and low starter interest rates, but salespeople made no proper assessment of what level of lending they could afford to repay.

my italics: interesting, I didnt think this was an undersupply issue- I thought it was more that the houses that were being built were not at the level that so so many could afford on a 3.5x income- hence the 6x income IO and other 125 type loans we have seen.
he banks we took over did agree in October to maintain lending at 2007 levels - and have done that - but in the new situation that was not enough to cover the 50% fall. So we're now signing new agreements with each of the existing lending banks to substantially - and rapidly - increase their lending and to do so on terms that are fair and affordable for small business. In addition, the Bank of England will set up the facility to lend directly to big businesses for the first time ever

Is this true? Is lending really at 2007 level now... I personally think not- are we bering lied to
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • I stand corrected on Cable. A pity that noone was listening to him. Perhaps had he not been a member of the LibDems who were noisily throwing out the drunk then the old may he might have been given a bigger platform.

I really don't undertstand - how is this propaganda?

As far as I can tell, it's just a website linking various pre-existing resources together, and a information channel for the public about what's going on. You seem to have a very odd idea of what propaganda means.

The OP could easily be considered as an "opposition propagandist". Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but disagreeing with something and calling it propaganda are two very different things.

Stop being such a snob. The Government's providing information to citizens, since when has that been a bad thing? Or is it too low-brow for your superior intellect?
  • Gordon Brown really is loving this, isn't he?
"Action is being taken all around the country to help the economy come through the recession sooner, stronger and fairer."
    First line on first page.

Sorry, this is all becoming very Orwellian.

Obviously, if I were the government, I'd do something similar. We are where we are, and they're not going to take the blame for that, so you'd expect them to try and talk their way out. I'd like to think I'd want some more substance, but I'd probably have got sufficiently blinded/jaded/bullied by then, I don't know.

    Still doesn't stop me thinking it's c**p.
