recently my husband and i decided to split.
we were already findng it hard to make ends meet and were using overdrafts to survive. we are currently still in same house as im trying to get deposit to move into private rented.
i let tax credits know situation which has now sent me into panic.
today received letter saying owe £1600 from overpayment.
these are our debts please someone give me some advise what to do
£1600 overpayment from tax credits
£4000 unsecured loan from a business we no longer have
£2000 credit card (in my name but jointly run up)
£1300 overdraft in joint account
i am currently getting £50. child tax credit and waiting to see if income support will give me anything. i cant work due to looking after child.
my ex has now changed it so his wages go into his own account so he obviously isnt going to give me anything.
ive tried to talk to him regarding these debts and all he keeps saying is i will just let them take the house and i will go bankrupt.
im worried sick as its always been me who has sorted any money problems out but this time i cant see a way out of it.
im living miles away from family so have no support, and trying to get back to be near them is impossible due to the long housing lists.
if it wasnt for my child i wouldnt be here any longer but i know i have to carry on for him.

Ok hon I am semi new at this - have been here a while but not overly good at emergencies but didn't want to leave you without saying something
I would open a new bank account to have the Child benefit and tax credits paid in to. that way it can't be sucked in to your over draft.
1. can you afford to make any payments? if yes how much,if no then you need to inform your creditors - one pound token payment and renegiotate payments
- if that is the case then you go to the CCCS (number and website at the top of the forum.
You need to post up a SOA - statement of affairs - incomings and outgoings.
Make sure all your bills and bank statements are in order - to double check amounts.
I know you are worried and frightened hon but it will be ok. You will get through this. please now go to bed, even just to rest I will find oyu some useful links before I go to bed and you can start fixing a plan to tomorrow

Hi Sassy:hello:
Sorry to hear you are having such a bad time. It must be hard living together when you are no longer a couple.
For the people on here to be able to offer you proper advice you really need to post an SOA
http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html (format for MSE at the bottom)
Because your situation is changing you will have to provide estimates for some items.
Try looking at entitledto.com and work out what benefits etc you will get when you are living on your own with your child. Is your child your husbands child? - because you will be entitled to receive maintenace from him and should factor this in.
Its tough when you haven't got family for support but you will get lots of supprt and advice on here once we understand the situation better.

Try not to over-worry: you may not have the help of your ex at sorting out your money situation, but you do have MSE to help you get through which is much better!

have had a call back from a debt counselling service today and they were really helpful, going to send me a pack out so i can send all my debtors details of my outgoings etc.
they have said once ive got my own place so i know what is incoming and outgoing they will be able to sort out a debt plan for me. the relief is tremendous.
have spoken to tax credits today and they agreed for me to pay that at £22 a month and once im living on my own to ring them back if i am finding that a struggle which means i will be ringing them.
thanks for all your advice, i might manage to get a bit of sleep tonight.0 -
Am really sorry to hear of your situation - i'm sure you'll find alot of support here to let you know that you're not alone and don't have to go through this on your own.
I went through a marriage breakup 5 years ago and it is one of the most horrible times so i can sympathise with you 100%.
Please don't think you're on your own.
Take care
