Ingrown Toenail Removal

Hi All

Im having to have my ingrown toenails removed by the doctor as its affecting my walking etc etc

i know nothing about how it is done and googling comes up with 3 or 4 different ways of resolving it

my toe nails arnt at the moment infected, and i've had to pull out as much as i can get away with just to be able to go to work. however when they grow back the problem is there again.

slightly concern'd what going to happen and how im getting to work. so any help or advice would be appreciated.

cheers

Why not discuss the options with your doctor?

My DD has had two ingrowing toenails removed by taking a section out from each side of the nail. They were well anaesthesised first and needed follow up treatment to change dressings for some weeks.

From my experience and thats about 10 times per big toe on each foot is to have a complete nail ablasion which means the whole nail.Wedges of nail can be taken out but in my experience it only serves to solve the problem for a while then it comes back again with a vengence. Each time the nail has been well anaesthesised with several injections and a rubber tourniquet on the toe to keep the anaesthetic in the toe.I finally went into hospital and spent an hour and a half having both completely done with phenoyl used to burn the nail bed once and fo all (means no more nail) at the same time in theatre, yes it was inconvenient but having 1 done then another just doubled the recovery time. You will have to have dressings done at first on a daily basis then every couple of days etc in order to keep the wound clean. You will be off work but I've heard of people going back to work the following day.I couldn't do that as I was a fisherman and on my feet quite a lot and also wore wellington boots which were quite sweaty, usually it was anything from 6 to 8 weeks to recover but everyones situation and healing process is different.
    Cheers

  • hi, i had both my big toe-nails removed (9 yrs ago) best thing i ever had done!!! i just went to my local clinic, and the podiatrist injected both toes, then VIOLA!!!! toe-nails were ripped off and he applied banages and had to go back a few days later to be checked, then it was just a matter of cleaning them and looking after them myself, washing them in salt-water and putting plasters back on, i was 25 at the time, and no-one noticed i had them removed, now my DD's tell every1:confused:, mummy's got no nails!!!

My son had the same treatment although there were no follow up visits. I changed his dressings. Solved the problem for him.
  • I had to have one of mine done after a horse stood on my toe and the nail dropped off. It grew back in ingrown and caused me no end of bother. They inject your toe with a local anaesthetic in a few places, then when numb they simply tug on it and release the bed underneath by using a scraper. You can only feel pressure but I have to admit, it does smart a bit afterwards, when the anaesthetic wears off. They will give you plenty of pain killers. I was told not to wear a shoe for a couple of days but I needed to go to work, I just wore trainers so my toes weren't too confined.

EDIT: forgot to add, my nail bed was cauterised which should have meant the nail wouldn't grow back in. It has grown back in but not ingrown, looks a bit wonky but I'll take a wonky toenail over a sore toe any day

My son had the whole nail removed some years ago when he was about 17. It worked - but he now has an ingrowing toe nail on the other foot
