Sending Out Your Cv?

Whats the chances of getting anywhere by just sending around your CV to potential employers even if there are no vacancies advertised? I desperatly want out of my current job, so much so I am on the virge of walking out, stupid idea I know but I am fed up being depressed in there.

hi nirelandguy
I have been doing the same thing, have had one positive response but no current vacancies so back to square one. I have had enough of my job too really. I have only sent it out two or three times so far and only over the past four to six weeks. But I am going to keep doing it because I want to change jobs and I expect the possibility of redundancy shortly too so want to get myself known to potential employers.
Best of luck with it all.

Hi yes I also expect redundancy, its just a matter of time, we have no work on, or more I have no work. I've typed my CV out this evening so am going to send it around tomorrow.
Best of luck to you as well, hope we find something. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
And include a couple of really key points in your covering letter.0

It can work - that's how my OH got his job. I helped him put together a CV and cover letter, and one of the companies he wrote to, decided that he would be more suited for a slightly different job to the one he was looking for and called him in for an interview and test.
You have to be prepared for a lot more rejections than usual (many places you write to on spec won't be hiring, so there's less chance of a call back than if you were to write to a place that was definitely taking on staff!) and a lot of non-responses.
But it can work.0 -
For the sake of a few stamps you've got nothing to lose and it might pay off.0

Just to warn you, most companies have a lot of CVs on file at the moment. We have over 200, and that's being far more selective than usual, but no vacancies - just loads of people sending CVs.0

I definitely wouldn't let it dishearten you though. Being proactive whilst in employment is without doubt your best chance of securing employment elsewhere. Make sure your cv is concise and accurate and enclose a concise well written covering letter.0

Hate to be negative, but I don't know anyone it's worked for, and most of the companies I've worked for, when we got unsolicited CV's they'd go straight in the bin. In some cases people doing this kind of thing are even seen as a bit of a nuisance.
Granted if you're someone with very specific skills (like a lighting technician writing to a large theatre, or have just completed a phD and are looking for a research assistant's post) it is probably a bit more effective - and bars and restaurants are always looking for people, so it's worth a go there - but for most people I think it's a bit of a waste of time.
I think if you're going to do it you need to research and choose your target companies very carefully, tailor your CV and enclose a covering letter that explains exactly what you're looking for.0
