Credit File - CIFAS

hello all,
I've just been looking at my credit file using Experien just to see how bad it looks.

There was a record on there under CIFAS (fraud prevention) which has my ex's name against a catalogue, does anyone know what this means?

Also, will my credit file always be associated with his even after i am discharged?

Many thanks

Since you no longer have any financial relationship with him, if you write to the credit agency disassociating yourself with him they should remove his info.

If not, post up what they say here and we'll see if we can help.

I would wait until discharge. Not much point doing anything until then, because you won't be able to get credit anyway. Once you are discharged, write a letter disassociating yourself from your ex.

That assumes you can get a basic bank account, if not then I would send them the letter now. When you do it, make sure that you send it recorded delivery.

A CIFAS can actually be registered against an address so you may have difficulty if it is logged at your current address. Basically it is a warning to lenders to double and triple check your details as it is a system set up to identify fraudulent applications. Your ex probably applied for something with details which were not quite in keeping with what were used to apply before and the system flagged it up - however it is logged against the address as the theory is that if the person if giving material falseties in applications, they could pretend they are a different name to try and evade it.

The good news is that as long as your ex isn't still making these phoney applications then it will disappear off your record after 13 months.
