how to work out what an area is really like?

bit of a confusing one, i have lived in the same town my whole life, and in the same part of the town for 20 years, and am looking at buying a house, fair enough but i dont know the parts of the town all that well. i know where things are but thats it, i know where used to have a bad reputuation and some places have always been no go areas and i know the ones that will never change but what about the other places? how do you tell an 'up and coming area' from a 'drug infested dump'?
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

  • Will your arrival raise or lower the tone of an up and coming area?

Borrow a dog. Go for lots of walks in a new area. There is nothing to beat slowly wandering round an area at different times of day for getting to know it.

This is a useful site. I am moving away in 2/3 years time and am using this site to help me choose where to move. It gives figures on crime rates, success of schools, and even the average income of people in the area and what newspaper they tend to read!!!!

You need to have a good look around but if you put in the postcode etc. you can find out all sorts of things. Hope it helps http://www.upmystreet.com/

You could try renting a room for a while.
    Local pubs are good indicators.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

Up and coming areas will have skips and things outside where houses are being done up. Skanky areas will have really old skips with people sleeping in them.

The local 'corner' type shops are also a good place to find out about the area too.

    I've been Money Tipped!
20 years living in the vicinity, and knowing you fit in one of the two locals seems like it should be sufficient to know you'd be comfortable there, doesn't it? :)
