I really endorse the previous posts about Marigold - it`s also brilliant for cooking rice. Make up a pint of stock/ 1 cup rice/2 people and gentle cook the rice in it(without stirring) absorbs the flavours beautifully

Ditto the support for Marigold - although like most stock it does have quite a lot of salt in it. They have however launched a lower salt version, which seems to be just as good (have just put it in my dinner tonight). I am veggie, so it is definately ok for non meat eaters.

The best veggie stock is called MARIGOLD swiss vegetable Buillion. It is a loose powder in a tub, health food shop sell it, and so does our local TESCO. It's not particularly cheap :( but it is delicious, and you can make a hot soup drink in a cup with it too. My Health food shop sells a big tub which works out cheaper than the little ones. They do a lo salt one too.....

i agree, marigold is superb! it also makes a nice seasoning mix

you can make your own stock but saving peelings, tops and tails, leftover veg etc in a bag in the freezer til you have a decent amount then simply pour it all in a pan, cover with water and simmer for a few hours

put a colandar in a bowl, dump the pain into that and you thwo away the solids in the colandar (or put them in a worm bin) then use the stock in the bowl ;-)

onion skins are really nice in the stock by the way... don't use the seeds from chillis or peppers...they make it taste wrong

Near the bottom it says that aspartame acts in a similar way. I had heard lots of times that aspartame would be the next big scandal but I never knew why

I hardly ever use sugar substitutes ie low cal anything and now I know why

aspartame has had many studies done on it

in the states years ago they found that people consuming a lot of products containing aspartame were coming down with MS symptoms!

most of them lost their symptoms eventually once they removed these products from their diet however some were permanently afflicted even though they did not actually have MS!

i hate the taste, it's very chemical so i just don't use anything with aspartame in it.

they actually put aspartame in some of walkers crisps.. CRISPS? and what really gets me is that they often use BOTH sugar and aspartame... for heavens sake why can't they just use sugar?

  • I went to tesco last night for a few things. I walked by the stock shelf and almost all the marigold tubs were gone. Lets hope that more people are becoming aware via MSE. I saw a man perusing the half cal sugar and it was all I could do not to tell him about aspartame
  • I have really had my eyes opened by this post!! Just over a year ago I had episodes of really bad palpitations which led to a diagonosis of atrial fibrillation. Luckily they got it sorted with medication but I was told by my cardiologist that I should avoid caffeine, alcohol and anything with msg in it. I immediately sorted out my cupboards but had no idea that oxos had msg in them!! I use LOADS of oxos!! I will now go out and buy in a supply of Kallo. I have always used Marigold and agree that it is lovely. Does anyone know if Bovril has msg in it? On the aspartame debate, I have real trouble with my weight and when I got diagnosed with AF really changed my diet and cut out all "diet" products, even low fat spread and guess what? I lost nearly 4 stone!!! I only ever have full sugar drinks, but only occasionally - mostly I drink water, or water mixed with basics apple or orange juice. There is some really scarey research into Nutrasweet.

MSG has certainly seeped into Martin's brain

At the end we were all asked “would you be happy to receive an 8p Valentine’s card?” My answer? “Yes of course, as long as it comes with a kiss from the right woman”. However, if the MSG’s reading this…. don’t take the message too literally.

I try and use Kallo for this reason too :happyhear ... although they are expensive I use the fabulous low salt ones - they are suitable for vegetarians/vegans too and excess salt doesn't make home cooked food better for you either. :heartpuls

I cannot believe that something I have used for years is full of MSG, I cannot afford to throw away the stock of beef, chicken, veg and lamb stock cubes I have in but I will not be buying any more..............
