they wont discuss it with me will they so no point trying? or should i?? i know he wont ever phone himself and the money will just sit in the bank with him being scared to spend it or maybe one day one of his not too honest friends/family will help themselves to it ........
  • but your friend has told you of the payment so perhaps they are really looking for some help - i know its difficult but you could reason it out with them and say well you arn't going to spend it unless you know what its for therefore you have nothing to lose by phoning them - perhaps you could offer to go round and make the phone call and then pass them onto someone - alternatively offer to email them on their behalf

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. Boy, wont he be a happy bunny if its all legit and he can keep it.
Does he not remember getting any post regarding it. I know they would normally write to say it has been credited to the bank.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

well that is where the problem lays - he was lodging with my mum and when she died he moved out but, even though he paid £25 he said to redirect his mail it still got sent to the old address where the new tenant isnt very trustworthy...so, as i know our postman i had a word and asked if he did find any mail to my mum or to my friend would he pass it to me to pass it to him so i know they arent getting their hands on it....

hence, all mail comes to me if it is the usual postman but there has been the odd bit gone astray....

as my friend is elderly he doesnt remember things and even though i have told him to make sure he changes his address on everything i know he hasnt done it....he has now gave me permission to do this for him so that will be sorted monday...

    thanks

Hi magoogy, there is a point in ringing, it might get sorted quicker.
Ring the number, explain what has happended, tell them you have the gentleman with you who you are referring to and he wishes for you to deal with it for him, will they take the instruction from him (to let you deal with it)
over the phone. I have to do this many a time for my husband who has problems talking/hearing, worth a try, i have never been turned down yet.

  • Same here, I have done this for my husband when he is too anxious to speak on the phone.

They usually just ask him his date of birth or NI number and mother's maiden name or something like that for ID and then he tells them he wants me to speak on his behalf.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

im still waiting for my friend to come and once he does, which could be anytime this week as he just turns up, i will definitely phone them while he is with me...

    thanks all
  • Just a thought....is he maybe entitled to Pension Credit and has not been claiming it until recently?

Also...can you let us know what happens? I'm interested!

Hope he can keep the money!

Another thought....whatever they tell you on the phone, ask if they can put it in writing too so that your friend has something for his own records - he will probably find this more reassuring than just being told on the phone.
