in Cutting tax
I have been made redundant and finish in april and have managed to find a new job starting in april so will not get my p45 for a while and my new employer has sent my starter pack to send back with a p46. My question is stupid i know do i tick box b this is now my only job, but since last 6 april i have had another job etc or box a saying this is my fist job since last 6 april. my new start date is 14th april my gut instinct is box b but want to make sure i choose correct one.

As you won't start work until April 14 which is after April 6th I would say that you tick Box A as you will then be into a new tax year.0

thanks will do0

What I actually did was tick box A but leave the date blank. As we are still in this tax year if you put current date you may find out there are more complications. Leave it for payroll, I did include and overhead letter stating the above.0

Assuming your P45 will be issued before the 6th April 2009 - there is no point in sending it to your new employer as your new job starts in the next tax year.
Instead, you should send it to HMRC asking them to check if you are due a tax refund - as you may well have paid too much tax this year by not getting your full personal allowance for this year (because of the way they allocate personal allowances during a tax year)
For your new employer, fill in the P46 and say its your 1st job in that tax year..

Whether you tick box A or B and/or send your P45 to your new employer will depend on when you finish and receive your final pay from your current employer.
You say you finish your current job in April. Will your last pay be before or after 6 April?Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place0 -
after 6th april0

then you will have had another job in the tax year (if only for a few days)
so statement b will apply
the p46 should mean you can be put on a suitable tax code until they can process the p45 which you will get from your old employer
depending on pay dates you may be able to hand the p46 over and your new payroll process it before they pay you anyway!
I would make it clear you are referring to next tax year (09/10) on the p46 though.Indecision is the key to flexibility
