i just have a question for all you wise people

i have debts of around 13000 with about 12 companies, i Have started paying Chiltern to sort this mess out for me but one of the small debts is for £150 and it is with a collection agency and i wondered if i could offer them a full and final payment of £60 to write off the debt and not have anyone else chase me for the rest of the money?

can i do this and has anyone else done this?

  • Hi and welcome.

Firstly can I ask if Chiltern are a company who take a monthly fee in exchange for contacting your creditors and distributing money to them? If so the best advice I can give is to ditch them, there are charaties who will do the same thing for free so all your available money will go to your creditors.
There are links at the top of the page to these companies (sorry i dont know how to do links)

Run away if they are charging a fee - go through a free agency and ALL your cash goes to your creditors so the amount you woe goes down quicker and theya re happier (rumour has it that the free agencies have a better success rate of getting interest frozen too)

You can do this but be VERY careful as there is specific wording that you and they need to use and they MUST agree to mark your credit file 'satisfied' etc etc

I will see if I can find a link to some info posted by people that are far cleverer than me - back in a mo

  • Hi
As others have said, ditch Chiltern and go for either CCCS, CAB or Payplan who provide dmps with no fee therefore ALL your money is going to your creditors and not lining their pockets. And creditors do tend to respect the Charities more as they know they are getting all the money and over a shorter period of time.

National Debtline website has a good template letter that you can use (just amend to your circumstances) for F&F's. It worked for me with a couple of my creditors.

    Good luck.
