New kitchen, want to keep my appliances

Options
Hello all,

We are looking into getting a new kitchen later in the summer. We have a very nice big fridge freezer that we are going to keep (and keep on display in the kitchen, i.e. not hidden) and we have a relatively new washine machine and tumble dryer. We want to go with the "hiding appliances in cupboards" approach, rather than have them on display as they are now. However, I am concerned that I am going to get given the hardsell regarding this - something along the lines of "you have to buy the appliances from us as existing appliances will not fit in the units". I can see it now! Anyway, does anyone know if I would be able to get the hiding in the cupboard approach sorted with an existing washine machine and tumble dryer? Hope I am making sense!?

Thanks in advance.

Duncan

You could hide your WM and TD, but the problem you have is that you will have to bring the doors out for them 50-70mm depending on their style - this means any units at the side of them have to be brought forward too. This can create problems if you are getting the kitchen from one of the sheds as they don't tend to do end panels in anything over 600mm. (ie you'll end up with a gap behind the last unit in a run, this isn't a problem if that run of units is wall to wall) You'll also need to get extra deep worktops to accomodate this.

The whole "your appliances wont fit our units" is rubbish, as appliances tend to be of standard sizes.

The other option is just keep them freestanding for now and when they do eventually break down, then replace them with integrated ones (just make sure you buy a couple of extra 600mm doors for this)

I have hidden freestanding appliances in a few kitchens I have designed, it isn't ideal, but can certainly be done. If you have any more queries, ask away...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Hi Duncan

We had our kitchen done last year with units from Wickes (in Sheffield) fitted by an installer they recommended - made a great job of it and the designer was great and was happy to incorporate anything we wanted to do, including our own appliances. Don't know if they are all as good as Sheffield, but worth a try as really keen prices and the quality is good.

Looking forward to the summer and riding my big motorbike again, :cheesy: dieting hard to fit into my leathers and be able to breathe:lipsrseal!
  • If you're sitting the units away from the wall, you'll also need deeper worktops to make up the space.
  • Thanks all, not getting a new kitchen now, as my wife might be being made redundant, so just one wage which isn't going to stretch to such extravagance! Might jusst get a new cooker instead!
