Spotify - Internet Streaming Music

I have recently come across Spotify. OK, it's a stupid name but it really is a killer app! It even gets a write up in The Guardian.
What does it do? As the title of the post suggests it plays music over the internet.
They have literally MILLIONS of tracks available in all genres. I tried some really obscure 60s tracks, jazz and dub reggae titles and was stunned to see it came up with most of them, as well as the latest chart albums.
You sign up for an account, download the app and login to your account. You are then presented with an interface that looks a bit like itunes. Search for the tune you want, click on it to play, add it to a queue or a playlist. You can share your playlist with others.
It is all legal and above board, all the artists get paid and, and best of all, it's FREE. You can pay £9.95 month for a premium edition but it's not necessary. In the free version you get a short audio ad every 20 minutes or so - it's really not intrusive.
Note that it is streaming - not a download site - i.e. you can only listen to the tunes in real time; you can't copy them to your mp3 player.
We have installed a copy onto an old PC connected to the hifi and use it as an uber jukebox.
Hope someone finds it useful.
PS: Just found 2 other threads on this - sorry!!

Since I want to contribute as well as learn on this site I figured i'd offer this.
Spotify is an online free music toolt hat lets you listen to anything in their fairly large and rapidly expanding database of music. The only catch is that you have to suffer through an advert every 20 minutes or so.
Despite that I think it's a good way to listen to all sorts of new and interesting music. I've found a whole bunch of new bands that I like and as said before it costs nothing but a mild bit of annoyance at the adverts.
For hopefully obvious reasons, it requires a decent broadband to run.

Welcome on board
If you would like to know when something has already been posted, you can click on the "search this forum" box at the top of the threads. It saves clutter on the forum if things are not duplicated.
There are a lot of good suggestions for free music on this thread, and a search of 'free music' will show you more threads:

You know, I could have sworn I plugged 'Spotify' into the search engine already after I read the 'how to post in this forum' post.
Drat. Thanks for the merger though.

It has been mentioned before, but it's so good it's worth mentioning again. Cheers. To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a Heaven in a wild flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And Eternity in an hour.

This is great...iv been using it for a few weeks now. Only downside is it doesnt actually save the music to your pc...it streams it direct from the internet. Great for partys though! :beer:James thinks worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it doesn't get you anywhere
If i help you...Please thank me! :beer:0
