Wine ideal for a wedding toast !

Please can anyone give me any advice. I find this is such a lovely site for advice for weddings and I do thank everyone.

We are not planning to buy Champayne for our toast due to getting married on a tight budget does anyone have any suggestions as to what sort of wine we could have instead, my sister was talking about a sparkling wine or Cava but I dont really know we wont need to buy much as we are only having 32 adults, so how many bottles should I also buy.

Thanks for any help

Oooh I was going to ask this for about the same number of guests! I thought about having about 8-10 bottles.
  • Hi!

You can get quite a nice cava in M&S for around £6 a bottle, however, if you buy more than 6 bottles you get 10% off. Keep your eye open for bargains though as they often have offers on where you can save even more. I think at the moment you get 20% off if you buy more than 6 bottles. Its always worth checking the wine aisle or asking a SA in M&S if they have any wine brochures around as these often have vouchers inside - the last one I picked up gave you an extra £5 discount.

I would probably buy 12 bottles for 32 guests. You could probably use much less if its just for the toast but I'm a worrier so I'd rather have a bit extra just incase!

Just a point though - have you checked with the venue whether they add a corkage charge for supplying your own wine?

Good luck & I hope this helps :D

I'd also like some feedback on this from anyone who knows about wine: We can't afford champagne for our daughter's wedding in October as there will be about 80 daytime guests, but having tried a few Cavas over Christmas and New Year havent been particularly impressed with them (the own brand £4-£5 ones anyway!). I seem to remember Prosecco is quite nice...would this be suitable to serve for the toast? We are stuck with having the venue provide wine as part of a drinks package, or paying £8-£10 a bottle corkage
  • Asti Spumante, if you like a slightly sweet wine. Again you can get this on offer somewhere.

As previous poster said, check if the venue will charge for corkage. ( that is supplying glasses and opening the bottles)
You can get a minimum of six glasses out of a bottle.

Don't forget to provide something non-alchoholic for the non-drinkers?drivers.
  • Out of a normal bottle of wine / cava you get 6 x 125ml glasses.

We bought fizzy Banrock station at Christmas, when it was half price in Sainsburys, we know we like it, as have drunk many bottles in the past!!!

We are also providing wine for the meal so the toast will only be 1 glass i would imagine how many glasses would you be able to get out of one bottle, yes we have to pay £4 per bottle for corkage thanks.

  • 1 bottle = 6 normal champagne flutes.

so for 32 guests you need 6 bottles.

You get six rather paltry glasses out of a bottle - it doesn't fill the glass. Aim for 5 decent glasses per bottle - you won't then have to worry about how much is going in a glass when pouring either.

I once worked in a champagne bar!

  • You could try a version of Kir Royale - the classic one uses Cassis (blackcurrant) liqueur - but I've been known to use Ribena when skint! Just a little added to a sparkling wine/Cava - especially if it's a bit too dry for your taste- and turns the wine a festive pink!

Prosecco can be really nice and you can normally get one in Aldi - test it first to be sure you like it.

Aldi might have some bottles of their Veuve Monsigny champage left, it beat the top champagnes in a blind taste test. There's none left in either of the Aldis in St Helens/Haydock though. We bought the last of it :P
