home made ice cream is wonderful, but not cheap, because you're making it from 'real' ingredients & not the cheap emulsifiers, fillers & chemicals most commercial so-called ice cream contains
once you try it, you'll probably never want to eat the bought stuff again. but don't expect to save money!!!0 -
you can also make frozen yogurt - much healthier!
it depends what type of ice cream you make as to what it costs. We often make frozen yogurt out of a decent quality yogurt and a bag of frozen berries out of the freezer cabinet in most supermarkets = under £3 and much much nicer than shop bought stuff.
And then you can go and pick your own fruit (unless you live in the middle of London - LOL) when it's in season which makes it good value.
I thoroughly recommend it - go for it!!Highest debt - £24500
Current debt - £0 !!!!

You could try this Nigella recipe for bitter orange ice cream. I used the seville oranges left over from my marmalade making.
It tastes so good, and was really easy - you don't need an ice cream maker to do it.. It won't do your diet any favours though!'Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.'0 -
The ingredients are, basically ..... home made custard - egg yolks, caster sugar, single cream (or full fat milk), vanilla (essence or pod). Then whipped double cream.
You can't use the "imitation" cream, it must be normal dairy single/double cream.
The result, however, will be better than anything you can buy - and I include the "posh" ice creams that sell for around £4 a tub  But when next in the supermarket, have a look at the list of ingredients on the tub and compare it with the above.
You also need to take into account any other ingredients you use to flavour the ice cream. Two favourites in our house use fairly cheap additional ingredients - brown bread (toasted crumbs) and honey & cardomom.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
thanks for the replies. it's my birthday soon so may ask for it from my brother. quite often when we are in the supermarket they have cream etc reduced so that would reduce the price. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090

Here is a simple but delicious icecream that you don't need an icecream maker.
Quick Icecream (Banana)
3 ripe bananas
1/2 cup condensed milk
1/2 cup cream
1 teas vanilla
1. Peel & slice bananas, pop in blender & whizz.
2. Add other ingredients & whizz together on high until thick & creamy.
3. Scrape into container & freeze.
Before serving, move the ice-cream from the freezer to the fridge for about 20 mins to soften it slightly.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -
