Christening cake - help

After nearly two years we have finally decided to get our daughter christened, but I have no idea where to get a personalised cake from (Apart from Marks & Spencer but not too keen on the design). Does anyone know anyone/anywhere in Somerset that do them at a reasonable price??

I don't know anywhere in somerset but we bought a large plain iced cake from tesco from there wedding range and went to a cake shop and bought a bible to go on top and some ribbon o put round the cake. People thought we had it made by a cake shop! Have a look on ebay for cake toppers. Sorry I couldn't help much but hope that's an idea for you x
  • you should try some of the larger tescos that do cakes, i got one for my mums 50th for about £9 and they printed a photo out on it for you there and then! i got a photo of her in the middle and they got some writing etc on it for you, so then all i did was get some icing pens to go over the writing tht was printed off and i got some coloured ribbon to match the balloons we had and then got some edible glitter to dust the edge - prob cost about £15 in the end when done and it looked great - maybe you could do something like that. wouldnt have to have a proper photo as some of the sample ones had me 2 u bears on.
hope get some good ideas - have to show what you do!

It is really easy to make a professional looking cake using the supermarket ready iced sponges/fruitcakes (even chocolate from Somerfield I believe) like the other posters have said.

I have a set of alphabet cutters (cost about £2.50), they are block capitals approx. 1.5" square. It looks really effective if you cut the baby's name out of pastel pink or blue icing and place it evenly spaced all the way round the edge of the cake (easily attach with a little water).

Like others have said, all you need then is some edible glitter dust to highlight the letters and the top of the cake and then a simple topper from a local cake shop or ebay.

We got a extra large cake with roses and the children's names on from Costco for about a tenner - enough to feed about 70 odd people.

Why not try doing it yourself. Thats how i started cake dec. Buy a cake and a pack of ready to roll icing, roll it out and cover the cake and then make some little decs or buy a little train or something. Try typing Cake decoratoring into youtube.com for help.

Parsons cake shops used to do them in the past, don't know about now.
  • I had a marks and spencer traditional wedding cake and decorated it myself when i got married...think the cake was £40 and it tasted beautiful..im not artistic at all and it still looked lovely with a topper and some sugar flowers.so sure you could do it with christening cake..specially made ones are so over priced xxx
  • we got our DD christened when she was 2 and i bought the marks and spencer cake which looks like 3 pink presents in a pile then at the bottom on the board they iced 'happy christening ella', it worked really well as i didn't want anything too babyish as she was a toddler being christened and all the other ones i had seen were for babys christenings. it looked really nice and tasted nice too!
