my relative has just died leaving a will made out with The Midland Bank as executor,s and am shocked too discover they take 5% of the estate as fee,s for the service I was told by my solicitor today

I'm not surprised. Banks are the most expensive executors you can get. They dont really want to do it and they price themselves as much. However, your relative would have known the fee. Banks do everything expensively. They can afford to as it comes to them on plate. They dont need to be competitive.
