How do we discharge our mortgage?

We paid off our mortgage but Bradford & Bingley refuse to return our deeds unless we nominate a solicitor to arrange the "discharge" and receive them on our behalf. They claim that Scottish law requires such, but it sounds expensive...
Can anyone confirm the legality, and if it is necessary, any suggestion of a cheep solicitor/anticipated cost?
Apparently customers in England can have them posted FOC - we suggested they post the deeds to a family address in England but they still refuse.
