Question about debt collector

Hi, I'm not sure which board this should be in so hope I've picked the right one.
I've been receiving letters from Roxburgh (sp?) debt collectors stating that I owe Hutchison 3g a fair bit of money. I have not had a 3 mobile as far as I can remember so wrote them a letter asking for them to send me proof that the debt was owed and they responded by asking me to call Hutchison for proof of the debt. I've drafted another letter stating that if it is they who are chasing me for the debt - they should be able to prove that the debt exists? I haven't received anything from 3 about this 'debt'.
Anyway just want to know if I'm right with my assumption or should i write to 3 asking them what they are playing at? I'm not exactly rolling in the dough being a student so these letters are quite worrying.
Also is there any way this can affect my credit rating?
thanks,

Hi. Firstly, you've already taken the correct and initial steps. Roxburgh must proof the debt is yours otherwise ignore until they do so. It's one thing writing to someone - it was on Watchdog recently with an agency for example and twice - but it's another to say it's your debt without proof.Anyway just want to know if I'm right with my assumption or should i write to 3 asking them what they are playing at?
No, any acknowledgement from your initial letter would mean you could be taking responsibility for a debt that is not yours.
There is a section on BBC Watchdog's website with the letter to send a collection agency and what to do do in this situation.
It's nothing plenty haven't had before for example. So, do nothing until they provide that proof - if I ran up to you in the street and claimed you owed a million pounds would you just believe me and give it to me; see my point? and this is no different, you'd carry on walking or run I imagine- or take a look at the WD site or search MSE cos I am sure there was something about this on here recently.
And in case you get letters from them saying 'you must prove it's not your debt'. The onous is on THEM as they are chasing you not the other way around.Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.
