default on credit file

I had never requested for my credit file till last week when I tried to upgrade my account and was declined yet I manage my account so well, was shocked there was a default- Nationwide of £290!!!I contacted them to find out what this was about as I have a flexi account which my child benefits go into and that I was certain wsa fine, it turns out I have ANOTHER flexi account which is now closed that was overdrawn to £290 hence the default. they say they sent bank statements, bank charge letters etc and even debt collection agency I have moved 3 times and wasnt sure If any of the mail got to me at either of the addresses. Anyone who can help me with what I can do besides paying for the the bank charges which I plan to do soon as I get paid next week. I have spoken and written to natiowide and they sent me a letter saying they cant remove the default from my file...this has really messed my credit. what can I do?

Is the whole £290 made up of charges?
How come you had 2 accounts the same?

I would be putting in for a reclaim for the 290, Certianly would be paying it

So you informed Nationwide that you have moved on three occasions and they have changed the address on one of your bank accounts but not changed the address on another account? If so this is their error.

  • hallo, yes the £290 is on charges only unathorised overdrafts.one flexi account had cheque bk the other didnt not sure why I had the 2 accounts but should have closed it when I had the chance as it was not being used at all.i was saying I moved 3 times but had not received the statement of the the account which they have defaulted (maybe had asked for it to be paperfree-not sure have requested for statements),
Should i pay for it first and then reclaim? How long will the default be on my file? Will it still have an effect on my credit?

A default will have a big impact on your credit rating.
If you had not requested 2 account to be opened or if they had failed to send statements to you or notify you of the default, it may be better to make an official complaint. If you had been sent a notice of default then you would have had a certain amount of time to pay the money owed before the default went on your credit file.

Even a settled default has an impact on your credit rating so i would reclaim and send a letter to them requesting the removal of the default as you never received a notice about this, but had informed them of your address changes. If you jsut pay it now i think it will be even harder to get a refund and much harder to get the default removed.

Reclaim the £290 charges and ask for the default removal as it was all down to charges.
