Different income tax figures on new P45

in Cutting tax
My partner lost his job in July 2008. He got his P45 which showed he had earnt £6450.24 and paid £955.20 in tax. As he signed on for Contributions Based Job Seekers Allowance he handed in the relevant parts of his P45 to the job centre. On 20th January his JSA stopped as he had been unemployed for 6 months and becuase i work full time and earn £14,000p/a he is not eligable for Income Based JSA. Therefore he signed off from the Job Centre and has today received his P45 from them. However, on the form it now states that he had earnt £8,023.01 (which obviously includes the JSA) but that he has only paid £628.80 in tax. How can his employer state he has paid £955.20 but Job Centre state only £628.80.
As it is very unlikley that he will find employment within the next few weeks he has today filled in a P50 and he has to send parts 2 and 3 of his new P45 however will HM Revenue and Customs work out any tax due back on the lower figure stated as this could make a difference of £300 or so, which although any money would be very handy to receive at the moment, we would much rather receive a refund from the £955.20 figure.
any help would be much appreciated.

It seems approximately correct because the JSA would have included an element of tax refund0

My understanding is that any tax rebate owed is paid when you sign off. On the P50 form it advises ...."You will get your repayment after 5 April from youris earlier."
HM Revenue & Customs office if you are claiming taxable
Incapacity Benefit or from the Benefit Office if you are
claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance or when your claim ends if this
If your jobseeker's allowance was paid into your bank account have you checked to see if the rebate was paid in, otherwise I would check with the jobcentre.

Thanks for your response Chrisbur. I must admit i had thought that the Jobcentre would pay back any tax owed once he had signed off but nothing has been put in the bank nor has OH received any correspondence from them. I think we will hold off from sending the P50 then and even if it means we wait until end of tax year, at least we know we should receive a little something back. :rolleyes:0 -
Why don't you tally up all the payments he received whilst claiming JSA. If it equates to more than £8023.01 - £6450.24 = £1572.77 then he has received a refund of tax from them. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
