I'm planning on getting a new chest freezer.I know there's a formula for the size you need - cubic feet per person. Can anyone tell me what it is or suggest what size I need for 5? I freeze meat in bulk and make stuff for the freezer.0

Lowe's carries freezers that range from 5.5 cubic feet up to 25 cubic feet. To determine the needs of your household, consider the following:
* How big is your family? The more folks you feed, the more food you need. Multiple the number of people in the family by 1.5 cubic feet.
* What are your food shopping habits? Do you buy food, especially meat, in bulk packages to save money? A cubic foot of freezer space holds about 35 pounds of food.
* Does your family pre-prepare food in bulk? Farmers, gardeners and hunters may have more need for a freezer than city apartment dwellers.
* How much space do you have for a freezer? Just a corner in the utility room? This factor may also influence your decision whether to buy an upright or chest freezer.just in case you need to know:

As big as you can afford or fit into your house. You never know when you're gonna find a bargain0

I'd say get the largest you can fit in the available space.
I have a 14 cu.ft. for a family of 5 and often wish I had more freezer room.0 -
Hi thriftylady,
I've merged both your threads together so you can have all the replies in one place.
There are five of us and I don't know what cubic feet our freezer is, but it measures 40''x23''x33'' and we still had to get another fridge freezer last year to take the overflow. I read somewhere that there should be 2 cubic feet per person, but that doesn't sound much to me.........I would go for the largest freezer you can afford/have room for.

Thanks Pink-winged:)
Looks like the general opinion is 'as big as possible'.0 -
According to my Be-ro recipe book 40th Edition it say 2 cubic feet per person.
As there are 5 of you. You should be looking at 10 cubic feet plus.
Only thing with chest freezers is that you can't always see what is the bottom. So ream boxes might be a way to store items.
Mind you this comes from someone who has a 6 cubic feet chest freezer and another 3 cubic feet within a fridge freezer. And there are only two of us
But it oh so handy. Should mean I go shopping less often. But that does not seem to happen. Now I know when Reduced to clear is on the shelves
But I use the chest freezer for long term storage and the one under the fridge as short term so has open packets, half loaves of bread etc.
