Default removal automatic after 6 years?!

hello!
I've come across so much conflicting info on this...
If you have a default on credit report that is over 6 years old (6 years since default date and status is 'settled') and the account is no longer active should the credit reference agencies automatically remove it from your report?
One of the agencies (Call credit) have just removed the default without me requesting but equifax are saying that Vodafone (who registered the default) have to request them to remove it...
Is this true??
thanks guys

Was the person you were speaking to aware that the default was 6 years old?

The default should be removed 6 years after the date of default.
The account will be removed 6 years after it was closed. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

Equifax are aware that the default is over 6 years old and they informed me that the company who registered the default would need to request that they remove it...
I think i'll try and speak to someone else at equifax to get clarification!0
