The majority of banks have basic accounts which are suitable, ie no cheques, overdraft and so on. The general advice is to open a new account just as you go bankrupt (that's what I was told and what I did - I went straight down to the co op the day after). You don't ahve to be discharged to get an account. If your friend didn't inform the halifax they were declaring b'ruptcy, then maybe that's why?
Hoep that helps a bit.0 -
I'm lost as i've been advised by CAB, PayPlan and others that no matter what the situation is with your bank account, it will get frozen and then its up to the bank to either close it or re-activate it.
I was also told that there is only 3 banks that will give bankrupt ppl accounts, co-op, barcleys and another but can't remember who.
you see i've got a very basic natwest account, do overdraft, no debit card, no cheque book etc etc and was told it will def get froze and 99% they will want to close it..
wish there was some way of confirming all these different rumous/advice...0 -
The co op is a good one to go for, as you do get a debit card which you can use in shops and on the net (visa electron). Before I went bankrupt, the first thing I did was arrange with my employer to have my wages paid into a different account - in this case, my mum's - in case of delays or problems. Then I opened a co op account. It was a good job I did this as my co op account took 11 weeks to open (problems with obtaining id). So long as you have the relevant id that shouldn't be a problem.
On the day, the Official Receiver told me that my old hsbc account was effectively frozen from that day, and anything that went into in would be seen by the bank as payment for my debt.
I didn't know who would give me an account in the beginning, so I just rang round all the banks I could think of. The best thing you can do is start asking now.
If you don't owe your account much money, why not give them a call and see what their policy is (you'd have to lose th overdraft though). You could also ring your local court (where you would be declaring) and ask about what to do, they do give some good non-judgmental advice.
By the sounds of it though, I would personally try to open a new account when you delcare, so at least maybe you could get a debit card, like with the co op.
Hope that sounds clear, its still early for me!0 -
No bank accounts do not always get frozen now. They used to but not now.cd02 wrote:I'm lost as i've been advised by CAB, PayPlan and others that no matter what the situation is with your bank account, it will get frozen and then its up to the bank to either close it or re-activate it.
