Could someone please expalain the rules on State Pension. I was under the impression, based on comments here, that there was no such think these days such as Married Couples Allowance. Yet the Pension Advisory Service states the following.

The full BSP from 6 April 2008 is:
*only 28 qualifing years.

Your wife is entitled to claim a state pension based either on her own contributions or on yours (where she would be entitled to a 60% pension.)The combination of your state pension plus 60% of it for her adds up to what sometimes still gets called the "married couple's allowance".
Obviously in your case it will be better if she claims in her own right. She may be able to buy the missing years in arrears so she gets the full pension. Ask the Pension Service..Trying to keep it simple...
