can you apply to two different banks

Just wondered if you can apply to two different banks for a mortgage to see which one you get an offer from first because we have been waiting 5wks now with the abbey and as i have been reading these posts on here other banks seem quite a lot quicker.
Thanks

  • Hey again :)
Im also thinking of booking an app with Britannia to start another mortgage application because im starting to get quite concerned with the length of time the Abbey offer is taking. There will be fees paid on application that might be non refundable though.
  • you can but if abbey have done the credit check and another bank does one then your credit rating is lowered. check with https://www.creditexpert.com

abbey did my credit check the day my application was submitted
  • Hi
We have not paid anything for surveyers fees so will not lose anything they will lose our custom though by being too slow. I am not sure which bank we will go to didnt know whether to just get in touch with who we have our mortgage with at the moment. The only think that i can imagine is we will apply to another bank then abbey will offer us a mortgage the same week or something.
  • Abbey did our credit check the day we did the application, i got a credit report just to see. We have a good credit report so i am hoping if we do go to another bank it would not effect us.
  • Is credit expert the type of site that makes you sign up for a credit report even though its free then you have to cancel it before they take any money from you?

Is there another way of doing it?

The reason Im asking is I have ended up doing two mortgage applications because I didnt get the rate I wanted first time, even though I used a Whole of Market Broker. At first, I thought the broker had just done an enquiry but I think he has put in an application as we have had a roll number from the Halifax, but no offer or anything. Our second application is taking ages too.
I have autistic spectrum disorder which is a social communication disorder so please be patient with me.
  • thepeachyone i have sent you a pm.
  • So could we apply to another bank even though we are currently going through a broker who the building company have stated we must use, would we owe any money to them if we cancelled the application, we have not paid any surveyers fees. We are just fed up of waiting for a decision from the abbey.
