Our local authority are giving way large compost bins, mine's arriving in 2 weeks, and I need some help about what I can and can't put in it, please? I know about the obvious, weeds, grass cuttings etc. Then all veggie peelings, tea bags, egg shells and apple cores etc. After that I'm unsure what else. You have to try and…

I'm planning to make my own compost heap but I've yet to find any old pallets to use as the framework, but what I do have is a brand new black plastic dustbin so wondered if I could use that instead?

If so, would I need to cut in any holes to aerate it or could I use it as is and just tip it out to turn it periodically?

Toozie, I think "green and brown" refers to the type of waste used, i.e. green - veg & garden waste; and brown - cardboard, paper etc which I believe you have to layer to get a good compost
