Bank charges

I have just join so if this is in the wrong place, oops!
I had a referal charge on my account with Natwest of £30, when i checked my statement i found the 8 transactions it refered to. Six of them were in stores using "Chip & Pin" technology and two were hole in the walls.
In a nutshell it would appear that although when i spent in the stores and there system asks the bank are there funds to cover and the bank says yes we will hold the money for you and the same at the hole in the wall, come Monday morning when they come off your account and the bank say but he doesn't have enough money for this lets look at it, pay it and charge a referal fee.
I have approached the bank by letter and phone, who seem rather reluctant to call me back and it now turns out they wont give me my charge back.
Surely this is the banking system that is at fault and not me, i moved money in to the account to make thing right, the next day.
The person i spoke to (like reading off a prepared sheet) said that because it was a switch card they guaranteed the payments even though there was not enough money there. My reply was so if i take all the money out of my account and went to ASDA they would make the payment even with no funds in the account, I DON'T THINK SO!
Anyone else had this problem using there debit card????

No I've never had the problem. But then I know how much is in my account and only rely on ATM balances for confirmation of what I already know. If I can't reconcile the two I don't proceed.0
