Is feta cheese cheesy?
Is it like a mild cheddar or like a goat's cheese (which I'd hate)
I was out a while ago and saw advertised where we were eating a tart.
It was butternut, cranbery and feta cheese, and I was too cowardly to have it in case I didn't like it and it would be such a waste...

Feta cheese has quite a strong taste - very difficult to describe. It's quite tangy, but all crumbly rather than creamy - in terms of "aquiredness" it's pretty much in the middle of normal and goat's cheese.
When you have it cooked in tarts it tastes quite different again, somewhat milder and, I find, somewhat rubbery but quite tasty nonetheless.
It's really delicious and definitely worth trying to see if you like it!0 -
It has quite a salty taste, I find. I love it though, with the right things - in that tart you described it would have worked well. I like to crumble over roasted veg or salad.2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0

Tastewise it's a bit like a Cheshire or Caerphilly - sort of tart and salty but creamy. It's much more moist though. It's not really a strong cheese at all, it's quite mild and fresh.0

Why don't you just ask to try a piece next time you're at a deli counter

If you've ever had a Greek salad then Feta is the cheese that is in it.
It doesn't taste at all goaty, especially in this country when it is almost always made with cows' milk, but it is quite salty. On a deli counter it is the one sitting in a container of water. If you do buy some then put it in a dish of water in the fidge and don't put a lid on the container. No need to change the water - if you do the cheese will get less and less salty and end up like a compressed ricotta. If you really want to change the water for some reason then add a pinch of salt to the new lot.
Drain the cheese well before using.0 -
Ooh, I love Feta crumbled over watermelon
I find it's quite a salty-tasting cheese but it's mild, and not hard like cheddar - it's all crumbly.
I agree, you should just ask to try some, though it does taste a bit different once it's cooked0 -

I see Thriftlady, like me, is someone who "grazes" their way around supermarkets, farmers markets, etc., etc.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

but it's a good way of finding out whether you might like something;)
I love feta with melon Freyasmum-I like it with the pink melon, can never remeber whether it is Gallia or Charentais. I'm going to buy some today.0
