Alternative career option suggestions for a Firefighter please?

It looks like the current conditions of service are deteriorating, and I will have to look at an alternative career, either full time or part time!

I know these are hard times, I was thinking of doing some form of training until the economy improves, the training and or career really should be flexible, as my shifts mean that doing a course on a regular day is difficult.

I would kindly appreciate suggestions/options for careers, training and selecting alternative careers?

It depends on the sort of person you are and maybe your age?
You're probably very active now but are you likely to want that from your next job?
Do you want to travel or stay local?
Are you good at things like DIY or more academic stuff?
    Or arty/crafty type of work?

If I had my time again, I'd have joined the regular army instead of the T.A while I did a boring job locally.

Please explain how the current conditions of service in the Fire and Rescue Service are deteriorating? Changing career from the public service to the private sector in a recession may not be best move.

You can get free career advice and guidance, either face to face from Nextstep or by phone from Learndirect.

For help on here you need to give far more information on your existing qualifications, interests and aims. Nobody can make suggestions in a vacuum.

Have a chat to the FBU about learning at work - they're currently running loads of different schemes and can help in loads of different ways.

One of the FT firefighters where I work has just trained (whilst still working) and qualified as a teacher. Apparantly they also helped him sort out bursaries and stuff so that he could manage financially.

Mark you are spot on pal, the fire brigade really is going down the plughole. The only option i might suggest is to look at getting some formal health and safety qualifications and starting out specialising in fire safety/extinguisher training to business, good luck whatever you decide though.

an ok plan/idea now is better than a great plan/idea 5 years down the line.

Hospitals and large companies do have Fire Safety Officers. However you may wish to pick some form of employment that you enjoy?
