Dog Food!

Hey :)

I have only just joined, I joined to let people here know about a petition I started online but have been perusing the boards for the last half hour and think the place is even more awesome than I did in the first place :)

So.. I would like to contirbute a very humble piece of money saving advice that I have found recently, it is very specific and won't save you loads (unless you have loads of big dogs) but it does cut one household bill almost in half.

Righto, dog food.. pedigree chum and all the others are pretty much full of rubbish, the quality of the meat is very, very low, it is far more expensive than it should be imo, my doggie (Bobo) for one got very little from it and was always raiding the bin until I did this.

Go to the butchers and ask for the lowest grade minced meat they have, tell them it is for your dog. The butchers near me charge 70p for a pound of the stuff, this is about twice as much meat as you get in an ordinary can. My doggie who is a medium sized boxer/staff with a metabolism higher than an average sized star!

Just bang it in a pan (reserved for this use only) and boil it, if your doggie is constantly hungry put some dirt cheap pasta or other carbs in there. This bulks it out even more to the point that for 70 pence I have been giving my doggie 2 big meals a day which he LOVES. The pasta will put weight on some dogs so be aware of this if they start getting fat and put them back onto the Atkins diet with no pasta.

The meat itself is usually a mix of lots of different types, the butchers near me puts all the left over salad in there too (they do sandwiches) the stuff is extremely nutritious and will do your doggie a lot more good than the washed, boiled, flavoured and nastified canned rubbish.

The best thing about it imo though is that it is half the price of canned food and sooo much better quality.

Hope it helps someone out there :)

You're right that it is probably better than canned food, as this is mostly rubbish.

To be honest with you, boiling it will take more nutrients out of the meat, and cost you more (cooking it etc) than just giving your dog it raw. Google the BARF diet (Bones And Raw Food or Biologically Accurate Raw Feeding).

Id probably use rice rather than pasta, and add raw vaggies to it too. Anywho, its all listed in the BARF diet, is much better for your dog, and works out cheaper than buying dry food or canned food too.

Anywho, dont want this to come accross as lecturing or anything, just saying that the meat (as long as it is passed as "Fit for human consumption" will be much better raw for your dog. Alot les hassle, and no extra costs of cooking it.

    :)
I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:
