How do I wash a supersoft jumper?

My son has the most gorgeous softest jumper and he and I love it (hes 5 by the way), its unlike any other item of clothing we have and a wash is long overdue ! Really its sooooooooooooooo soft and cuddly
Its from Joules, is 100% polyester and says 40 on the label..... also says machine wash cold gentle cycle.
I guess it will never be the same as it is now but how do i wash it to help retain the softness?
I'm about to put a regular wash on now at 40 but its warm i guess , will that ruin it as it says cold....? I dont think i've ever washed on a cold cycle before ..
Thanks
M x

p.s the material is similar to these socks !

I think I'd be inclined to hand wash it if you are worried. :)

I machine wash all of my sweaters at 15 degrees and they are fine.

Whether you machine or hand wash though, I would fold into a small bundle and put in a 'washing net' to stop it being pulled and stretched. If you don't have a washing net, use a pillowcase and tie the sweater in using the corners of the pillowcase to make a small parcel.
