Food shopping in the Market

Options
Evening all,

Quick question,

99% of the time we shop in a local supermarket, but recently we tried the city market. As we wanted some super fresh local fish. While we were there we walked down the meat section and saw deal after deal for just £10 (including chicken, beef, pork, mice, sausages and more). We thought this was a great offer, however when we got it home it was 90% fat and has since been binned.

Should i venture back and try it again or is are these deals not the best quality?

If your are going to go back try buying mince instead of mice:D

I have never bought meat from a market but from reading on MSE forums it`s better to find a good local butcher not always cheapest but good quality.

We've bought one off steaks from the market before and we have been able to pick our own amazing meat, however my girlfriend made the point that when we ordered the 'meat pack' the guy reached under all of the on show good stuff for the stuff in a seperate section

Our small local market in Lincoln has 5 Sirloin Steaks for £5 which although a bit small are delicious:j They also do a pack for £10 which is usually a mixture of mince, chicken, beef, pork and sausages. We have had it once and it was delicious too:j Opposite the market there is a wonderful butchers shop. To complete our excitement there are two vegetable stalls selling top quality fruit and veg:j We have given up the supermarkets completely for our fruit and veg because of this and think that we should support our local traders:T

  • Market halls tend to have individual traders who generally stock locally sourced produce, so you cannot generalize.
Most cannot afford to stock poor quality food or they will soon go out of business.
If you find a good quality local market trader, butcher or greengrocer etc buy from them, tell your friends and keep local businesses open.

My DD has just left home to live in Leeds, very close to the market. It is fantastic! When I visit I buy meat in bulk from the local butchers to freeze, farm eggs at £1.40 per doz. The fresh bread and cakes are to die for. Veg also is good and cheaper than supermarjets. I wish our town had the quality and variety of this market.

veg is great on the market ours has huge dog bowls of veg/fruit for a quid and you pick out your own so no fiddling. often cherries/apricots/grapes etc

Our meat stall is ok but i only buy one lot at a time as it's hard to take it back!!
