Sneaky Asda pushing 'rewards' card

Options
Be aware that Asda have started pushing their credit card onto customers under the disguise of a rewards card. One guy approached me yesterday, but turned away saying ' oh, you again' when he recognised me as the person he spoke to the day before - I'd said 'but it's not just a rewards card, it's a credit card - this is mis-selling'

These pushers used to stand benignly in the foyer and ask passers-by if they want to save 2p per litre off Asda petrol (which is bad enough) but they've now moved in-store and are asking everyone if they're interested in the new Asda 'rewards' card.

This IS NOT just a rewards card - it's a credit card, yet the display stand they use is covered in posters proclaiming 'earn rewards points', with no mention of it being a credit card. I assumed it was a copy of tesco clubcard - but it's not.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Asda's credit cards - just the selling techniques they're using.

  • I agree with you 100%.

If they are selling a credit card then they need to make that very clear, only discussing rewards and other benefits after the customer has shown interest in applying for credit.

It is definitely deceptive miss-selling if you ask me!!
  • I assume that the card gives you 2p of a litre of fuel at Asda? But I think the words, Agreement, Consumer and Credit get in there somewhere do they?

Well, why is this a scam. You have a choice, talk or walk. I would walk.

Who said it was a scam?

Who said it was a scam? It's just scabby. It's as unscrupulous as time share sellers offering scratchcards to holidaymakers.

  • I was offered a "Loyalty" card at the Till in TopMan, thinking it was some kind of points saving scheme a la Nectar I said yes, then the guy pulls out the forms for a storecard. Told him I wasn't interested and he got quite snippy about it.

The op didn't say it was a a scam, but is warning people. Sadly, people who come on here are probably clued up enough to recognise when they are being sold a CC. It's those who aren't savvy that will fall for it.

Sainsbury and Tesco have reward cards that are just that, so it isn't unreasonable for some people to think that this is the same. When I opened my Dorthy Perkins card, I had to actually ask the question - 'this is a credit card, yes?' before the assistant admitted it. I'm not convinced that those around me who were signing were aware of that.
