Durable shoes - recommend a make.

I would like to buy a pair all-purpose of shoes that I can wear every day and still expect them to last several years.

I got fed-up buying new shoes every 6 to 12 months so decided to buy a pair of DM shoes. However after only 15 months of wear they have developed a small split in the leather uppers.

Someone has recommended the Clarks Gore-tex range. Does anyone know if they are any good? Does gore-tex last longer than leather?

Are there any other long-lasting makes that you would recommend?

I have two pairs of the Clarke's Gore-Tex.I find them warm in ice and snow-also waterproof(as it says on the tin).Uppers are leather ,the Gore Tex is an insulating and waterproof material also used in outdoor clothing etc.The first pair I bought are now about 3 years old,and still in v.good condition.Then again,I do tend to be quite light on shoe wear.

Ecco shoes are really comfortable and well made. The soles seem to last for ever and the backs of the heels don't wear through on the inside edge. Some of them are a bit clumpy in style but one or two in the range are a bit more elegant. I have a pair that I wear with trousers which are quite smart enough for the office but stand up well to the daily walk to and from the station

Although they can be a bit pricey I've settled on Merrell shoes for the last six years or so. Wearing them pretty much daily they usually last a couple of years and even after that they can be relegated to muddy days out moutainbiking. I still use a six year old pair for that (although with waterproof socks as they have a couple of holes now).

My most recent ones are Chameleon wrap slam (goretex to be waterproof to a point). They are nearly a year old and still look the same.

They also come in black and are goretex lined (goretex and leather are two different things) and leather upper. Waterproof and keep feet warm in winter.

I had one pair that lasted about 5 years wearing every day and i was a window cleaner at the time.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. Some good info here.

It's looking like Ecco is the favorate for a very long lasting shoe. I don't mind paying that kind of price if it means I won't have to buy another pair for another 5 years or so.

I guess the only thing left that would persuade me to get something else is if anyone knows of a make that lasts just as long with daily use but tends to cost less.

I did think the same, but I'm in thep rocess of waiting for them to get back to me because my mums soles - on both sides at the back - have disintergrated completely from the shoe after minimum use, I'm hoping it's just a one off because she said they were v comfortable.
