Try Googling "psychometric testing".

They are basically just testing your intelligence, aptitude and personality. If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.0 -

Depends on the job.... I'm qualified in psychometric testing so if you can find out what kinds of tests they are I'll try to help. (I don't really do it any more but licence is still live)
For example if it's an IT job then I'd run tests on spatial awareness, following instructions and verbal reasoning. If it's call centre then might do verbal, numeracy and customer contact. Management jobs then I might do a personality questionnaire and competency assessment.
It is quite acceptable to ring them up and ask for more information on what test battery they are using. Indeed, it's best practice to supply candidates with practice tests. if you find out any more let me know. In the meantime, there are some practice tests here

Thanks for all the replies:T
Cazziebo - your answer was really interesting and more than I could of hoped for, although we were shown round his propective employers today and given an induction tour of sorts the actual closing date for applications is next thursday, the manager we spoke with today said the next stage is the tests and it would be helpful if we could look these up when we went home, I would probably wait until after the closing date to ask any questions but wont hesitate to do so should he get through to the next stage - fingers crossed.
The job he has applied for is Coastguard Watch Assistant, quite a change from previous careers but perfect for him. The person we spoke today who is already doing this job spoke about being calm in an emergency and having excellent computer skills and an apptitude for learning a large amount of new things, when we know some more I'll contact you again if thats ok, in the meantime I shall get him to check out your link, once again many thanks.Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0
