Expenses claims for interviews/tests

Hello all

I'm due to go for a DWP written test and possibly interview next week. It is for a general Kent recruitment, so the location for tests/interviews is 'central'.

I don't have a car and have looked up the train prices ... £11.70 return. Does anyone know if I can claim the expenses back?

Many thanks.

  • best call and find out- if claiming JSA, may be able to get train fare paid.

Thanks - I did call and the guy on the phone was very vague, then asked someone, and said yes then no! Useless! I'll just keep the tickets and hand them in when I next sign on.

You can claim your travel under the Travel to Interview Scheme (TIS). However you need to go to the Jobcentre with proof of your interview (and be prepared for them to phone to check that it's for real) before the interview - if you don't then they won't pay afterwards.

If you're going by train then they will write you a travel warrant to exchange for a train ticket, if you're going by car then they will pay the petrol but not until after the interview as they will phone to check that you did attend.

The most important thing is that you must get it agreed before you go.

Thanks - I just got back from the DO and that's pretty much what they said. (I managed to speak to one of the brighter ones this time!)

Yes a very important point that! I was told on my first day at JCP that if I had any interviews, they could help out with travel expenses, however, they never said it must be arranged prior. When I had 2 interviews last week, I went along to the JCP with my receipts and was duly informed that "its too late" - I should have submitted the appropriate forms beforehand.

An important point to note is that they check up with your interviewer if you attend, and knowing this now, I wouldn't submit a claim anyway. The last thing I want is the chances of a good job thwarted by having JCP checking up with employers (already with enough on their plate) to make sure "I can be trusted to attend an interview" - I really don't think it would leave a positive impression, so its not entirely good help as it stands.
