Garage went bust???

I have just realised that my car tax ran out on my OH's car at the end of January and I hadnt even noticed. I thought it weird hadn't had a reminder or anything. Went on to DVLA's website and if you put your car registration in, it says when the tax is due - it said my car hadn't had car tax since April 2008    I phoned them and told them I had a tax disc and they said that they had voided that tax disc as the cheque the dealer sent them had bounced. It then turns out the car isn't registered to us either, we have got to pay £25.00 to get a new log book, can't drive the car and can't tax it until the new log book comes through  We tried to phone the garage and got hold of a number and they have said 2 weeks after we bought the car, the garage went bust and they had purchased the lease about 3 months ago. They said that they have had to advise most people to apply for new log books as the old people never left any paperwork. I have got the form off the internet to send off - it asks for the date of purchase, if I put the date of 2nd July, are they going to ask us to pay the car tax for the last 6 months??? Maybe I can appeal to the DVLA's nice side :o .

Sometimes it seems you take 3 steps forward then go about 5 backwards - sorry rant over :D

  • Wow that really is pants! I'm afraid I can't offer any advice, never having been in any situation like this before. I'm surprised you haven't been pulled over before now by the police or something!

Good luck with getting this sorted. Keep us posted!

The other worry I had was what if they had pocketed the cash that we paid and hadn't put in the books that it had been sold and therefore the creditors believe that they own the car and that we now drive round in a potentially stolen car bec(but hopefully that is just my vivid imagination running away with me :p )

If the cheque was to the business then you paid for the car.
