well done tryinghard40 for making a start, despite being registered on here for about 3 yrs have only recently started to actually use the site.
Today i have beef stew with lentils, overfilled the slow cooker and still have everything crossed it will be ok.
Been using Sainsbury value range for a while but today went to asda and it just doesnt seem so appealing, think its prob down to the marketing and i am very fickle:rolleyes:

when it comes to trying unbranded products, I agree with you, don't try them all at once - otherwise you risk a mutiny in the ranks! Try just a couple of products a week - your family will soon get accustomed to them. you can always be sneaky and put things in branded packets - eg cereal in the kelloggs box (doesn't work with baked beans) or quickly put the biscuits into the barrel before anyone sees the packaging. It's amazing how easily value products are accepted when nobody knows what they are!

  • Well done, Tryinghard40!

One of the key things, I think, is to be flexible. If you see a bargain pack of something, get it and make room in the budget elsewhere.
  • Oooh fabby - I've got my very own song! Will be humming it all evening now - thanks Mallika! I always knew my theme tune wouldn't be 'Hey Big Spender' .....

Yes, Sainsbury's basics are v. v. good! I haven't tried the chocolate like julia above but the chocolate digestives are the best I've tried.
My OH does the supermarket shopping and said that, last time he went, the conveyer belt was a sea of orange and white labels. He's become evangelical about it and now sidles up to other customers about to buy a brand name item and tries to convince them to try the basics version. One of the many reasons I don't go shopping with him any longer.
One of the other reasons being the broccolli wrestling - he thinks you shouldn't have to pay for the broccoli stalk as he never eats it so he wrestles the stalk off the broccolli then weighs it, sticks the resultant price label on it and leaves it by the scales to act as a lesson to us all.......his record is 34 pence!
As for home made bread, it may be cheaper but we just eat more - so no net saving here I'm afraid!
Good luck and well done so far!
    xx

my husband snaps the stalks off too why pay for what you dont eat!!

the bits of stalk left after chopping off the florets are bungged in a soup and blended down also
