planning ideas help for 18th birthday

Its my sons 18th this weekend and at last he has told me what he wants me to organise for the weekend.He wants canapes and champagne(cava,but dont tell him that)early in the afternoon for all of the family and close extended family so he gets to see everyone then a sit down dinner later on for just 12 of us,black tie I think.
He will see his friend next weekend and keep this weekend for family.
I need help!Dinner parties I can do so the sit down dinner for 12 is easy peasy but what I have never done before is such a special birthday as an 18th or a champagne and canapes event.
So how does it go?Do I just have the stuff on the table and background music and thats it or should I plan anything else,speeches and toasts maybe.
I asked if son wanted a theme in the canapes,e.g. mexican or chinese but he doesnt.I need to come up with a colour scheme for the table and room decos suitable for an 18 year old boy so please help with ideas for that too.
I will be shopping like crazy online today and tomorrow to get all the stuff I need to make this just right I am sure.
